ANDREA BOCELLI
Born: September 22, 1958 in Lajatico, Tuscany, Italy
Andrea Bocelli, born on September 22, 1958, in Lajatico, Tuscany, Italy, is a world-renowned Italian tenor, multi-instrumentalist, and classical crossover artist. He is celebrated for his powerful voice and emotive performances, bridging the genres of opera, pop, and classical music.
Born with congenital glaucoma, Bocelli became completely blind at the age of 12 following a football accident. Despite this, he pursued music with passion, studying piano, flute, and saxophone, and later focusing on singing. Bocelli studied law at the University of Pisa but continued to perform in piano bars during his university years to earn money.
Bocelli's breakthrough came in 1992 when he auditioned for Italian rock star Zucchero Fornaciari to record a demo of "Miserere," intended for Luciano Pavarotti. Pavarotti was so impressed by Bocelli's voice that he encouraged Fornaciari to use Bocelli instead of himself. This led to Bocelli accompanying Zucchero on his 1993 concert tour. The same year, Bocelli released his debut album, "Il Mare Calmo della Sera." His international breakthrough occurred in 1996 with the release of "Romanza," an album that showcased his crossover capability and included the hit "Time to Say Goodbye" (Con te partirò), a duet with Sarah Brightman. This song became an international sensation, solidifying his status as a crossover artist.
Bocelli continued to release successful albums that combined classical and pop music, such as "Sogno" (1999) and "Sacred Arias" (1999). He has performed at major concert venues around the world and collaborated with various artists across different music genres.
Bocelli has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and nominations for Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards.
