Biography | show moreshow less
Anthony Comstock (1844-1915) headed the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. This self-declared "weeder in God's garden," was a crusader for Victorian values. He was largely responsible for Congressional passage of what became known as the Comstock Law (1873), prohibiting mail or print transmission of anything deemed "obscene, lewd or lascivious." At the height of Comstock's considerable influence, obscene materials were defined to include birth control information, marriage manuals, and even in some cases anatomy textbooks. The US Post Office made Comstock a special agent with police powers, and he boasted of his responsibility for 4,000 arrests, 15 suicides, and the destruction of 15 tons of books. He carried on a war of words with playwright George Bernard Shaw, whom he called a "smut dealer."
