Biography | show moreshow less
Arthur Kornberg, born on March 3, 1918 was a distinguished American biochemist known for his research on enzymes that synthesize DNA. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1959 for his work on the biological synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), sharing the prize with Severo Ochoa.

Kornberg completed his undergraduate studies at the City College of New York in 1937, and in 1941, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Rochester. His early work included serving as a ship's doctor in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, after which he turned to research and completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.

Kornberg’s significant contributions to science began during his tenure at the National Institutes of Health (1942-1953), where he began his study of enzymes and bacterial metabolism. In 1953, he moved to Washington University in St. Louis, where he conducted groundbreaking research on how DNA is built up from simpler molecules. Here, he discovered the enzyme DNA polymerase I, which plays a central role in DNA replication. In 1959, his monumental achievement was recognized with the Nobel Prize. In 1960, Kornberg accepted a position at Stanford University, where he established the Department of Biochemistry and served as its chair until 1969. He continued his active involvement in research at Stanford until his death.

Apart from the Nobel Prize, Kornberg received several other prestigious awards, including the Paul-Lewis Award in Enzyme Chemistry from the American Chemical Society in 1951 and the National Medal of Science in 1979. He is also credited with writing several influential books, including “Enzymatic Synthesis of DNA” and “The Golden Helix.”

Kornberg was not only celebrated as a scientist, but also as a mentor and educator. One of his sons, Roger D. Kornberg, followed in his footsteps and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2006, making them one of the few father-son pairs of Nobel Laureates.
