Biography | show moreshow less
Arthur William à Beckett, a celebrated English journalist and intellectual, was born on October 25, 1844, in London. Known for his wit and satirical style, Beckett made substantial contributions to British journalism during the Victorian era, authoring numerous articles, novels, and plays.

Son of the renowned comic writer Gilbert Abbott à Beckett, Arthur inherited his father's literary flair. He began his career at The Glowworm, a humorous magazine published by his father. His talent soon caught the attention of Tom Taylor, editor of Punch Magazine, who invited him to join their team. At Punch, Beckett held various positions, including deputy editor from 1880 until 1902. His columns and caricatures offered a biting commentary on the political and social events of his time. He also contributed to other publications such as The Graphic, The Daily Telegraph, and The Globe. In the late 19th century, Beckett was instrumental in founding the Institute of Journalists, serving as the organization's president in 1894. He strongly advocated for the professionalization of journalism and helped establish its modern principles.

Beckett also authored several novels, including "The Member for Wrottenborough" (1881) and "Greenroom Recollections" (1896) and penned numerous plays, most notably "The Member for Bow," which premiered in London's West End in 1892.
