Biography
Gray (1810-1888) was an American botanist whose discovery of close affinities between East Asian and North American floras was a key piece of evidence in favor of evolution. A professor of natural history at Harvard University (1842-1888) who created Harvard's Department of Botany in 1842, he offered his collections to Harvard in 1864, founding the Herbarium of Harvard University, which became known as Gray's Herbarium.
