Benjamin Cardozo was Judge (1914-1926) and Chief Judge (1926-1932) of the New York Court of Appeals, then he was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Hoover and was sworn in on March 2, 1932 to succeed Oliver Wendell Holmes, who had retired at the age of 90. Cardozo, the second Jewish Associate Justice, served until his death in 1938. He believed that the courts should not merely interpret the law but help create it, particularly in adapting it to changing social conditions.
