Biography
Elena Kagan (b. 1960) is a graduate of Princeton with a M. Phil. from Oxford and a J.D. from Harvard Law School, she clerked for Judge Abner Mikva (1986-1987) and Justice Thurgood Marshall (1987). Kagan taught law at the University of Chicago Law School and Harvard Law School before practicing law with a Washington, D.C. law firm. During the Clinton Presidency she was Associate Counsel to the President and later Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. While Dean of Harvard Law School (2003-2009), President Barack Obama nominated her as the Solicitor General of the United States. She served in that role from 2009 to 2010. On May 10, 2010 Kagan was nominated as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, taking her seat on August 7, 2010.
