GEORGE SUTHERLAND (1862-1942), appointed Associate Justice by President Harding in October 1922, served until his retirement on January 18, 1938. Sutherland was considered the leader of the "Four Horsemen", Justices who opposed on constitutional grounds much of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal legislation. Born in England, Sutherland had previously served as a representative in Utah's House of Representatives (1897-1901) and as a Republican U.S. Representative (1901-1903) and U.S. Senator (1905-1917) from the state. Sutherland was also President of the American Bar Association from 1916-1917.
