ASSOCIATE JUSTICE HARRY A. BLACKMUN
Born: November 12, 1908 in Nashville, Illinois
Died: March 04, 1999 in Arlington County, Virginia
Biography
Harry Blackmun(1908-1999), appointed by President Nixon in 1970, was initially allied with the conservatives on the Court, but is best remembered for his 1973 majority opinion in Roe v. Wade, legalizing abortion. He retired in 1994 and died in 1999.  In March, 2004, Blackmun's papers collected at the Library of Congress were opened for public view: 1,576 boxes of papers and 38 hours of oral history.  The papers, and particularly the videotapes, are providing candid looks behind the scenes at the Court's deliberations.
