Noah Haynes Swayne (1804-1884), who moved from Virginia to Ohio because he opposed slavery, served in the Ohio State House of Representatives (1830) and was active in the formation of the Republican Party. Appointed by Abraham Lincoln on January 27, 1862, Swayne served as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court until he retired on January 24, 1881.
