Wiley Blount Rutledge (1894-1949) was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court on January 11, 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to fill the seat vacated by James F. Byrnes. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 8, 1943, he took his seat on February 11, serving until his death on September 10, 1949. Blount, who had previously been appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (1939-1943) by FDR had also been Professor of Law (1926-1935), Acting Dean (1930-1931) and Dean (1935) at Washington University School of Law and Professor of Law and Dean at State University of Iowa College of Law (1935-1939).
