Auguste Piccard (1884-1962) made a balloon ascent of 51,775 feet into the stratosphere in an airtight, pressurized gondola he invented. From 1932-1937, he made other balloon ascents up to 61,221 feet.  He invented a bathyscape in 1948 which dove to a record depth of 10,168 feet in 1953. Gene Roddenberry named his Star Trek captain Jean-Luc Picard in honor of Auguste Piccard and his family of scientists/explorers.
