Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum, better known by her pen name Ayn Rand (February 2, 1905 – March 6, 1982), was a prominent Russian-American author and philosopher. She was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and moved to the United States in 1926, eventually becoming an American citizen in 1931.

Rand is best known for developing a philosophical system called Objectivism, centered around the principles of individualism, rational self-interest, and laissez-faire capitalism. Her views were controversial and often criticized but also had a considerable following, particularly in the United States. She achieved fame with her 1943 novel "The Fountainhead," despite initial rejections from multiple publishers. The novel, featuring an independent and uncompromising architect named Howard Roark, became a bestseller. It was followed by her magnum opus, "Atlas Shrugged" (1957), a dystopian tale about a strike by the world's leading innovators in response to an overreaching government. The book outlined many of the core tenets of Rand's philosophy and further solidified her standing as a controversial yet influential thinker. In her later years, Rand turned more toward non-fiction to promote her philosophical ideas, authoring works such as "The Virtue of Selfishness" (1964) and "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" (1966).
