Barbara Walters (born in 1931) received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy Awards in 2000. The groundbreaking broadcaster boasts a host of firsts: first female co-host of the Today show (NBC, 1974); first female network news anchor (ABC, 1976) at a then record-breaking salary of $1 million annually; first to arrange a joint interview with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Israel's Prime Minister Menachem Begin (1977) and first to present an hour-long primetime interview with Fidel Castro. She has also arranged exclusive interviews with personalities from General Colin Powell to David Geffen (his first television interview), the principals in the O.J. Simpson trial and Monica Lewinsky (the highest rated news program ever broadcast). Walters has won several Emmy Awards and numerous other awards for her work, which has included the ABC news magazine 20/20 (correspondent, 1979-1984; co-anchor, 1984-2004), sub-anchoring ABC News Nightline (1991-2004), hosting Turning Point (1993-1997) and her popular Barbara Walters Specials. In 1997, she began co-hosting (and co-executive producing) The View, which won an Emmy Award in 2003 for Outstanding Talk Show.
