Beatrice "Bea" Arthur (1922-2009) began doing TV comedy in 1954 (The George Gobel Show, Caesar's Hour). After a hit guest starring appearance on All on the Family in 1971, Arthur got a sitcom of her own, Maude (1972-1978), for which she won an Emmy Award and was nominated for four Golden Globes. Later the co-star of The Golden Girls (1985-1992), Arthur had made her TV debut on Kraft Television Theatre in 1951. She has also appeared on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for her performance as Vera Charles in Mame (a role she reprised in the 1975 film, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination) and stealing the show as the matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof.
