BENJAMIN M. SPOCK
Born: May 02, 1903 in New Haven, Connecticut
Died: March 15, 1998 in La Jolla, California
Benjamin McLane Spock, born May 2, 1903, in New Haven, Connecticut, was an influential American pediatrician and author. He graduated from Yale University in 1925 and attended Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, completing his medical degree in 1929.
Spock's best-known work is his 1946 book, "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care," which has sold over 50 million copies worldwide. The book broke new ground by encouraging parents to treat their children as individuals and espousing a more loving and nurturing approach to child-rearing, in stark contrast to the stricter parenting philosophies of the time. It has been translated into over 40 languages, making it one of the best-selling books of the twentieth century.
In addition to his pediatric work, Spock was an active participant in the anti-war movement during the Vietnam War era. He protested against the draft, which led to his conviction for conspiracy in 1968. Although the conviction was overturned on appeal, Spock's anti-war activities resulted in widespread controversy and affected his professional reputation.
Spock also sought political office, running as the People's Party candidate for President in 1972, although his bid was unsuccessful. He was also deeply involved in issues related to nuclear disarmament and environmental health.
