Parsons began his NASCAR career in the late 1960s and quickly established himself as a competent and competitive driver. His most significant achievement came in 1973 when he won the NASCAR Cup Series championship.

He won 21 races in the NASCAR Cup Series, including the prestigious Daytona 500 in 1975.
