Campaneris made his MLB debut in 1964 with the Kansas City Athletics (later relocated and known as the Oakland Athletics), where he made an immediate impression by hitting two home runs in his first game, becoming one of a select few to achieve this feat. He was primarily a shortstop but showcased his versatility on September 8, 1965, when he became the first player to play all nine positions in a single game. A key contributor to the Athletics' success, Campaneris played a vital role in the team's three consecutive World Series wins from 1972 to 1974. His speed was a defining characteristic, leading the American League in stolen bases six times throughout his career.

After his time with the Athletics, Campaneris played for the Texas Rangers, California Angels, and New York Yankees before retiring in 1983. Over his 19-year career, he amassed 2,249 hits, 649 stolen bases, and was selected for the All-Star game six times.

Campaneris's influence extended beyond his playing career. He served as a coach for the Athletics and later as a special guest instructor for the team during spring training. His efforts in player development have made a significant contribution to nurturing new talent in the sport. In 2006, Campaneris was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy as one of baseball's most talented and versatile players.
