Holiday (1915-1959), born Eleanora Holiday, took her stage name from Billie Dove, the silent screen star idolized by her mother. Holiday began her singing career in 1939, at the age of 17. From the time she made her first recordings with Benny Goodman in 1933, her popularity rose rapidly. Holiday performed in Europe and sang and recorded with some of the best Big Bands in the United States, including Count Basie and Artie Shaw. In 1948, "Lady Day" performed her torchy ballads (My Man, Mean to Me, etc.) to a "standing room only" audience at New York's Carnegie Hall. Holiday told of her turbulent life and career in her autobiography, Lady Sings The Blues (1956), which was made into a movie starring Diana Ross in 1972.
