BILLIE JEAN KING
Born: November 22, 1943 in Long Beach, California
Billie Jean King (born Billie Jean Moffitt in 1943), who was ranked in the top 10 of tennis for 17 years, is the holder of 20 Wimbledon titles (including singles champ six times) and was U.S. champ four times. Credited with establishing the first successful women's professional tennis tour and paving the way for other female athletes, she was the first woman athlete to earn $100,000 in one year (1971). In 1973, 29-year-old King beat 55-year-old Bobby Riggs 6-4,6-3,6-3 in the nationally televised "Battle of the Sexes" to win $100,000 at the Astrodome, spurring new interest in tennis. In 1965, she married Larry King, with whom she founded the unique World Team Tennis, which has a co-ed format that King calls "the future". A member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the National Women's Hall of Fame, King led the U.S. team to a gold medal sweep at the 1996 Olympic Games and continues to coach.
