BILLY IDOL
Born: November 30, 1955 in Stanmore, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom
Biography
Born William Michael Albert Broad in Middlesex, England in 1955, pop/rock singer Billy Idol was one of the first recording artists (along with Duran Duran) to find success through the newly created MTV. Idol, a former follower of the Sex Pistols, had formed his first group, Gen X, in 1976 and was signed by Chyrsalis shortly thereafter. The group released several albums between 1978 and 1981 before splitting up. Idol went on to success with such albums as Rebel Yell (1984), his biggest selling album, which reached No. 6 on the charts and went double platinum, and Vital Idol (1987, a No. 10 album) and had a No. 1 hit with "Mony Mony" (1987). His other hit songs include "White Wedding" (1983), "To Be a Lover" (1986) and "Cradle of Love" (1990), and Idol found a new - and renewed -- fan following his cameo appearance as himself in The Wedding Singer (1998).
