Biography
Speedway motorbike racing was a popular sport from the late 1920s, especially in the British Empire. Australian biker Wilfred Stewart Lamont (b. 1908), called as "Cyclone Billy", raced competitively from 1924 to 1939, participating in the first England-Australia test of 1930 and winning the competition's coveted Silver Helmet in 1931. He was voted the most popular speedway racer in 1929. Known for his daredevil style, Lamont raced close to the fence, even knocking programs out of the hands of fans in the stands. At the onset of World War II, Lamont returned to Australia, leaving his bike and equipment behind, and lived a quiet life as a sugar refinery worker in Sydney.
