Biography | show moreshow less
A favorite of manager Casey Stengel, scrappy infielder Billy Martin (1928-1989) was a Yankee until 1957, then played for six more major league clubs through 1961. He was World Series MVP in 1953 and an All Star in 1956. Martin went on to a successful but controversial career as a manager with five teams, including the Yankees, whose owner George Steinbrenner hired and fired him five times. He would have been hired a sixth time, but died in an auto accident on Christmas Day, 1989. On August 10, 1986, his uniform number 1 was retired by the Yankees.
