Robert William "Bob" Barker, born on December 12, 1923, is an American former television game show host known for his longstanding role in "The Price is Right". Born in Darrington, Washington, Barker spent his early years on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where his mother was a schoolteacher.
Barker began his broadcasting career in the late 1950s, but it was in 1972 when he gained national prominence as the host of the CBS daytime game show "The Price is Right", a position he held for 35 years until his retirement in 2007. His catchphrase, "Come on down!", became a fixture of American pop culture. Before "The Price is Right", Barker had already achieved success as the host of the television game show "Truth or Consequences" from 1956 to 1974. His affable demeanor and quick wit endeared him to audiences, setting the stage for his subsequent career.
Barker has been recognized for his contributions to television with a number of awards. He received the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host 19 times, and in 1999, he was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. In addition, Barker was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1976.
