Biography
Robert Bruce "Bob" Mathias (1930-2006) won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon in 1948 (at age 17) and 1952. As a fullback for Stanford University's football team, he became the only man ever to compete in a Rose Bowl and the Olympic Games in the same year (1952). As a spokesperson for Wheaties cereal, he helped promote it as "the breakfast of champions". A Republican, Mathias represented California in the U.S. Congress for four terms (1967-1975).
