The son of film director Robert North Bradbury, Steele started his acting career in silent films in the 1920s under the name Bob Bradbury Jr. His breakthrough came when he began working in Westerns in the late 1920s. He secured his position as a popular Western actor with the film "Near the Rainbow's End" in 1930. In the 1930s and 1940s, Steele starred in numerous B-westerns, often as a cowboy hero. His rugged features and compact physique made him a convincing and popular cowboy in this genre. Notably, he starred in "The Trail Blazers" series in the early 1940s.
