Robert Louis Ridarelli, known professionally as Bobby Rydell (April 26, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – April 5, 2022, in Abington Township, Pennsylvania), was an American singer and actor associated with rock and roll, traditional pop, and the teen-idol era of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Rydell began performing as a child in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He appeared on Paul Whiteman’s television program TV Teen Club, where his stage name was developed. As a teenager, he worked as a drummer and singer in local groups before signing with Cameo Records. His first major chart success was “Kissin’ Time” in 1959.
During the early 1960s, Rydell recorded a series of hit singles, including “Wild One,” “Volare,” “Swingin’ School,” “Sway,” “The Cha-Cha-Cha,” “Wildwood Days,” and “Forget Him.” His recording career produced numerous Billboard Hot 100 hits and made him one of the prominent Philadelphia-based pop singers of the period.
Rydell also worked as an actor. His best-known film role was Hugo Peabody in Bye Bye Birdie (1963), opposite Ann-Margret and Dick Van Dyke. He remained active in concert work into the 21st century. The fictional Rydell High in Grease was named after him, reflecting his association with early 1960s youth culture.
