Bobby Shantz, born Robert Clayton Shantz on September 26, 1925, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, is a former professional baseball player who left a significant mark on Major League Baseball (MLB) as a pitcher. Over his 16-year career in the majors, Shantz displayed exceptional skill and strategy on the mound, playing for several teams including the Philadelphia Athletics, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Shantz made his major league debut with the Athletics in 1949. Known for his strong left arm and exceptional control, Shantz earned the American League Most Valuable Player award in 1952, an unusual feat for a pitcher. That season, he led the league with 24 wins, a .720 winning percentage, and a phenomenal 27 complete games. A career-defining moment occurred in 1958 when Shantz, then with the Yankees, pitched in the World Series. His performance, including a notable pickoff of Milwaukee Braves' leading base stealer, played a critical role in the Yankees' championship victory. Shantz went on to win World Series titles with the Yankees in 1961 and 1962 as well.
Throughout his career, Shantz was noted for his excellent fielding ability. He received eight consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1957 to 1964, attesting to his dominance on the field. In total, Shantz posted a career record of 119 wins, 99 losses, and an earned run average of 3.38. He was a three-time All-Star, appearing in the Midsummer Classic in 1951, 1952, and 1957.
