BOOG POWELL
Born: August 17, 1941 in Lakeland, Florida
Boog Powell (born John Wesley Powell on August 17, 1941, in Lakeland, Florida) is a former American Major League Baseball (MLB) first baseman. Throughout his baseball career, Powell's power at the plate and his defensive abilities made him a key player, especially during his time with the Baltimore Orioles.
Powell's professional baseball journey began in 1959 when he signed with the Baltimore Orioles. He made his major league debut for the Orioles in 1961 and quickly became an integral part of the team. Spanning 14 seasons with the Orioles (1961-1974), Powell's tenure saw the team clinch two World Series titles in 1966 and 1970. His formidable presence at the plate earned him the American League's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 1970. Across his 17-season MLB career, which also included stints with the Cleveland Indians (1975-1976) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (1977), Powell compiled a .266 batting average, hit 339 home runs, and drove in 1,187 runs. His achievements on the field were further recognized when he was selected to the All-Star team four times (1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971).
Following his retirement from playing baseball, Powell's love for the game continued. He became actively involved in various roles, including broadcasting and coaching.
