Biography | show moreshow less
Brian Hyland (b. 1943) scored two big pop music hits in the early 1960s: the novelty "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikin" (which reached #1) and "Sealed with a Kiss", now an oldies standard. (In the 1961 cold war spoof, Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three, the East German secret police torture Horst Buchholz by playing "Itsy Bitsy" over and over at a faster speed until he confesses to being an American spy.) Although Hyland's smooth pop style lost favor with the arrival of the "British invasion", he scored another big hit, "Gypsy Woman" (1970). Clark was featured on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and the Cavalcade of Stars tour, and still performs with other Dick Clark regulars in Branson, Missouri. Hyland was performing in Dallas and watched President Kennedy's ill-fated motorcade drive past. He wrote and later recorded a song about the tragedy, "Mail Order Gun."
