John Williams (1752-1806), was an American politician and physician, hailing originally from London. Williams studied surgery and medicine at St. Thomas' Hospital in London, and later immigrated to America and settled in Salem, New York. After coming to New York, Williams served in several official New York offices, including the New York Provincial Congress and the New York State Senate. It was also during this time that Williams came to the rank of brigadier general of a militia, previously serving as a colonel in the Revolutionary War. In 1789, Williams began his pursuit of an election to Congress, failing two times before being successfully elected to the 4th and 5th Congresses, serving from 1975 to 1979. He ran for re-election afterwards, but did not make it back into office, and passed away in 1806.
