Martin Davis Hardin (1837-1923), who fought with the Army of the Potomac, joined the Union Army as a Colonel in the 12th Pennsylvania Reserves (41st Pennsylvania Volunteers) on July 25, 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on January 1, 1862, Colonel on August 1, 1862 and Brigadier General on July 2, 1864. Hardin, who lost his left arm at Catlett's Station and saw action at Gettysburg, mustered out on January 15, 1866, but he was appointed Major of the 43rd Regiment of the U.S. Infantry on July 28, 1866. Hardin, who retired from the service in 1870, was the last surviving member of his West Point class of 1859.
