Rush C. Hawkins (1831-1920) enlisted for service in the Mexican War, and raised his own regiment, the 9th New York Infantry (known as the Hawkins Zouaves) to fight for the Union in 1861. As a colonel, he participated in operations on the North Carolina coast, quarreling with General Benjamin Butler but briefing President Lincoln and General McClellan personally on military options for that theater. He was wounded at the Battle of South Mills and participated in at the Battles of  Antietam and Fredericksburg (all 1862). He did no campaigning after 1863, but was brevetted to brigadier general in 1865.
