Brigitte Bardot (1934-2025) was born in Paris, France and she is a former French actor, model, and singer who became one of the most internationally recognized figures of European cinema during the 1950s and 1960s.
Bardot trained in ballet at the Conservatoire de Paris before entering modeling as a teenager. Her appearance on the cover of Elle magazine in 1950 attracted the attention of filmmaker Roger Vadim, which led to screen tests and early film roles. Bardot made her feature debut in Le Trou normand (1952) and appeared in several French comedies and dramas throughout the early 1950s.
Her international breakthrough occurred with Et Dieu… créa la femme (And God Created Woman, 1956), directed by Vadim. The film established Bardot as a leading figure in postwar French cinema. She subsequently starred in La Mariée est trop belle (1956), Une Parisienne (1957), En cas de malheur (1958), Voulez-vous danser avec moi? (1959), and La Vérité (1960), directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. Bardot also appeared in Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Mépris (1963).
During the 1960s Bardot expanded her career to include recording, releasing several albums and songs, including collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg. She continued acting in films such as Viva Maria! (1965), Shalako (1968), and Les Femmes (1969). Bardot retired from acting in 1973 following the film Don Juan, or If Don Juan Were a Woman (1973).
