C. Aubrey Smith (1863-1948) was an internationally renowned cricket star before beginning his acting career. He made his London stage debut in 1895, his silent film premier in 1914. His The Bachelor Father (1928) was his breakthrough role to American audiences, after which he played the quintessential upper-class Englishman in many films. These included Lives of the Bengal Lancers (1935), The Four Feathers and The Sun Never Sets (both 1939) and Scotland Yard Investigator (1945). He was knighted in 1944, honored for his positive portrayal of English characters to foreign audiences.
