Credited with inventing the first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine, Karl Friedrich Benz (1844-1929) attended the University of Karlsruhe and studied engineering, graduating at the age of nineteen. After working for a string of factories and companies as a draftsman and designer, Benz co-founded what came to be known as the Factory for Machines for Sheet-metal Working in 1871. His wife helped him buy out unreliable partner August Ritter and during the next several years Benz worked on developing new engines. It was during this time that he secured an impressive number of patents for the speed regulation system, the spark plug, the clutch, the gear shift, the carburetor, and the water radiator all while designing his two-stroke engine. In 1883, he founded Benz & Cie with the owners of a bicycle repair shop. The company produced industrial machines and static gas engines. Due to the company's success, Benz had more time to pursue hobbies and personal interests and this led to his development of a horseless carriage, which he successfully completed in 1885 and named the Benz Patent Motorwagen. The machine was the first of its kind to successfully generate its own power. Benz began selling the vehicle in 1888. Then, in 1893, Benz & Cie went on to produce the first four-wheeled car, and in 1899 the company began producing racing cars. Benz went on to earn a host of other patents, including one for the flat engine. In 1906, Benz left the company and founded C. Benz Sons and continued to produce automobile and gas engines.
