CARMINE DE SAPIO
CARMINE DeSAPIO (1908-2004) was the boss of Tammany Hall, the New York Democratic machine that successfully promoted the nominations and elections of New York City Mayor Robert Wagner in 1953 and Governor Averell Harriman in 1954. In 1961, Wagner led a movement against boss rule and was reelected for a third term. DeSapio was ousted from his position as Tammany chief by reform forces and "Tammany Hall" ceased to exist.
