Carol Dempster (1901-1991) starred in several of the later films of director D. W. Griffith, with whom she had a romantic relationship. She retired from film after marrying a banker in 1929. Critics in her time treated her harshly, and earlier Griffith stars Lillian Gish and Mae Marsh disliked her, but some of her films - especially Isn't Life Wonderful (1924) and The Sorrows of Satan (1926) are well regarded now.
