Charles Luther Sifford, born on June 2, 1922, in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a professional golfer. Known as the first African American to play on the PGA Tour.

Sifford began playing golf as a caddy in his early years, developing his skills in an era when African Americans were systematically excluded from PGA-sanctioned events. Despite facing significant racial discrimination, Sifford persisted in pursuing his golf career, playing in African American-only tournaments and winning the United Golf Association's National Negro Open six times.

His relentless struggle for equality in the sport led to the PGA abolishing its "Caucasian-only" clause in 1961. This pivotal change allowed Sifford to become a member of the PGA Tour at the age of 39. Sifford's career highlights include winning the Greater Hartford Open in 1967 and the Los Angeles Open in 1969. He also won the Senior PGA Championship in 1975.

In recognition of his contributions to golf, Sifford received numerous accolades. In 2004, he became the first African American inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. In 2014, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.
