Biography
CHRIS MADSEN (1851-1944), born in Denmark, moved to the US in 1876, enlisting in the 5th US Cavalry and fighting in the frontier wars. In 1883, he was President Arthur's personal guide in Yellowstone National Park. After leaving the army in1891, Madsen became a deputy marshal in the Oklahoma Territory, one of the famed "Three Guardsmen" (with Bill Tilghman and Heck Thomas) responsible for capturing or killing over 300 outlaws. Madsen personally killed several members of the notorious Doolin gang. Madsen served with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. In 1911, he was made US Marshall for all of Oklahoma. In his sixties, he was Chief of Police in Oklahoma City, and later served as a special investigator for the State's Governor. He tried to re-enlist for duty in World War I, but was disqualified by age.
