Born: October 01, 1934 in Johnsburg, Illinois
Died: October 20, 2004 in St. Pete Beach, Florida
Charles Joseph “Chuck” Hiller was born on October 1, 1934 in Johnsburg, Illinois and he was an American professional baseball player and coach. He was best known for his career as a second baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB), where he played from 1961 to 1968.
Hiller played college baseball at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota before signing with the Cleveland Indians organization in 1957. After several seasons in the minor leagues, he was acquired by the San Francisco Giants and made his major league debut on April 11, 1961. During his time with the Giants, Hiller became a key infielder. In the 1962 season, he played a central role in helping the team reach the World Series against the New York Yankees. In Game 4 of that series, he hit a grand slam off relief pitcher Marshall Bridges, becoming the first player from the National League to accomplish the feat in World Series history. Hiller remained with the Giants through 1965, posting his best offensive seasons during that period.
Following his tenure in San Francisco, Hiller played for the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates before retiring as a player in 1968. Over his MLB career, he appeared in 704 games, with a batting average of .243, 20 home runs, and 152 runs batted in. After retiring as a player, Hiller transitioned to coaching and managing. He worked as a major league coach for teams including the Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, and St. Louis Cardinals, where he served as a trusted member of several coaching staffs during the 1970s and 1980s.
