Biography
McNeil (1917-1993, born in Baltimore, Maryland) got entered show business as a vaudeville and nightclub theatre before her New York stage debut as Tituba in The Crucible. But the role that most people associate with her is that of matriarch Lena Younger in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun, a role that earned her a Tony nomination. She reprised Lena in the 1961 film adaptation, an effort that earned her a Golden Globe and BAFTA Film Award nomination. McNeil also earned a Tony Nomination for her performance as Mama in Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright, (1962-3) and an Emmy for a guest star appearance on The Nurses (1964).
