Clifton Daniel (born September 19, 1912 – February 21, 2000) was an esteemed American journalist, known for his long and distinguished career at The New York Times. Over the course of his tenure, Daniel held various key editorial positions and made significant contributions to the field of journalism.

Born in Zebulon, North Carolina, Daniel began his career in journalism in the 1930s. He joined The New York Times in 1944 and quickly rose through the ranks. His early work included reporting from London, where he covered post-World War II events, offering insightful analysis of the period's complex political landscape. In 1964, Daniel was appointed as the Assistant Managing Editor of The New York Times, and was later promoted to Managing Editor in 1969, a role he held until 1977. During his tenure as Managing Editor, Daniel oversaw the newsroom during a period of significant events, including the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal.

One of Daniel's most significant contributions was his role in the publication of the Pentagon Papers in 1971. In addition to his editorial work, Daniel authored several books, including a biography of Harry S. Truman, and works on American and international politics.

Daniel was also known for his marriage to Margaret Truman, the daughter of President Harry S. Truman, which brought him into a unique proximity to American political life.
