Turning professional in 1982, Pavin's prowess on the course became evident early on. Over the course of his career, he clinched 15 PGA Tour victories. Among these wins, his triumph at the 1995 U.S. Open remains a standout, as he secured his sole major championship title at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. Pavin's playing style was characterized by his exceptional ability to shape shots and his meticulous approach to the game, rather than relying on sheer power. This technique proved effective and earned him the PGA Player of the Year title in 1991. Further testament to his consistent performance, Pavin was among the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking for almost 150 weeks between 1986 and 1997.

Outside of individual play, Pavin also contributed to the United States' golfing efforts on the international stage. He represented the U.S. in three Ryder Cups (1991, 1993, and 1995), helping secure victories in two of those appearances. His commitment to the sport went beyond playing, as he took on the role of captain for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2010.
