Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1843-1899) became the Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Central and the New York Central and Hudson River Lines. The Michigan Central was part of the New York Central System acquired by Cornelius' grandfather, "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt. The railroad network grew to over 10,000 miles reaching from Montreal, Boston and New York to Michigan's Straits of Mackinac, Chicago and St. Louis. Two years later, in 1885, Vanderbilt became head of the family empire and Chief Director of its investments and philanthropic activities.
