MacTavish played 17 seasons in the NHL from 1979 to 1997, becoming notably recognized for being the last player in the league to play without a helmet. His playing career was distinguished by his roles with the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and St. Louis Blues.
