Daniel Cady Eaton (September 12, 1834 – June 29, 1895) was an esteemed American botanist known for his significant contributions to the field of botany. Born in Fort Gratiot, Michigan, Eaton hailed from a family deeply rooted in academia, which likely influenced his own scholarly pursuits.

Eaton received his Bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1857 and his Ph.D. from the same institution in 1867. Between these degrees, he spent time traveling through Europe and the Middle East, collecting plant specimens and broadening his botanical knowledge. In 1864, Eaton began his long-term association with Yale University as a professor of botany, a position he held until his death in 1895.
Eaton's most enduring legacy may be his work on ferns. His interest in pteridology, the study of ferns and their allies, led to the publication of "The Ferns of North America" (1877-1880), a seminal work that showcased his extensive knowledge and understanding of the field. His comprehensive treatment of North American ferns established him as an authority on the subject.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Eaton was an early supporter of forest conservation. He spoke out against deforestation and advocated for the responsible use of natural resources, a stance ahead of its time during an era of rapid industrialization.
