Biography | show moreshow less
David Cone (b. 1963) won 196 Major League games in his 17 seasons (1986-2003). He played mostly in New York: 7 seasons with the Mets and 6 with the Yankees. A 5-time All-Star, Cone won 20 games twice (20-3 with the Mets in 1988 and 20-7 with the Yankees in 1998). He led the league in strikeouts two consecutive seasons (1990-1991). He won the Cy Young Award with the Kansas City Royals in the strike-shortened 1994 season. He pitched in 21 postseason games, and was on 5 World Championship teams (Blue Jays 1992, Yankees 1996, 1998-2000), and pitched the only perfect game in inter-league play (1999) since Don Larsen's perfecto in the 1956 World Series. To make the perfect game even more perfect, Cone threw it on Yogi Berra Day in Yankee Stadium, which ended Berra's long absence from the park. Don Larsen was also present, and had thrown the ceremonial first pitch to Yogi! Cone had a following of devoted fans who called themselves "Coneheads."
