Biography | show moreshow less
Dave Kingman, born on December 21, 1948, in Pendleton, Oregon, is a former American professional baseball player best known for his powerful hitting. Over the course of his 16-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career, Kingman played for numerous teams, notably the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets.

Kingman, a right-handed hitter and pitcher, made his major league debut in 1971 with the Giants. Standing 6 feet 6 inches tall, he quickly gained a reputation as a prodigious power hitter, known for his home runs' extraordinary distance. However, his performance was marked by inconsistency, with a relatively low batting average and high strikeout rate. Kingman led the National League in home runs twice, in 1979 with the Cubs and in 1982 with the Mets. His career-high 48 home runs for the Cubs in 1979 remained the club record until it was broken by Sammy Sosa in 1998. Despite his power hitting, Kingman's fielding skills and plate discipline were often criticized. His .236 career batting average was among the lowest for players with his level of home run production. Still, he ended his career with impressive numbers: 442 home runs and 1,210 runs batted in.
