American violinist and composer David Sheinfeld (1906-2001), the child of Ukrainian immigrants, played first violin with the Pittsburgh and San Francisco Symphonies, but earned even greater laurels as a composer of works for orchestra, percussion and strings. His honors included awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Koussevitsky Music Foundation, and he won a Composition Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Sheinfeld completed his last composition, "Different Worlds of Sound," at age 94, shortly before his death.
